IN THE BEGINNING.....
1892

Richard Mokros came to America alone at the age of 14 as steerage on a Trans Atlantic steamer.

1898

By the age of 20 Grandpa Richard had opened his first bicycle store in Shorewood, Wisconsin on Oakland Avenue across from Shorewood High School in the 4000 block of north Oakland Ave, Shorewood, Wisconsin.  Pictured are Richard Mokros (left), and Otto Mokros.
As advertised in the shop windows Grandpa not only sold new Mane’s Bicycles but considered repairing a specialty. The services included enameling and nickel plating, he advertised selling a wide range of “Bicycle Sundries”.

1908 - Business Expands

The business expanded after the turn of the century with The Belleview Garage located at 526 E. Belleview on the east side of Milwaukee. The primary function of this facility was to recharge and service electric cars.

Two things happened that ended both the bicycle store and the service garage, the Great Depression and the demise of the electric car. Like many Americans Richard lost nearly everything during the depression and found himself having to work for others. Sometime in the thirties Grandpa Richard went to work for the famous Milwaukee bicycle dealer Don Wares staying with Don through World War ll.
Today

The current owner of Mokros Cycle, David Mokros worked for Don Wares in 1969 and 1970. During that time I learned the trade from one of the “Masters” of the industry.
Many of Grandpas items from his store are now at the current location including the sign from the first store. An 1800’s vintage 48 drawer oak parts cabinet and many of his hand made tools.
